Depending on Sam Gagner’s status, Edmonton Oilers head coach Pat Quinn has a couple of cards to play heading into Monday night’s game against the Phoenix Coyotes.

With 14 forwards to choose from, Quinn has some option when it comes to his lineup.

On Saturday, Robert Nilsson and Gilbert Brule were healthy scratches. Nilsson has sat out three consecutive games while Gilbert has been in the press box for the past two games.
“We’re going to have to look at our criteria as to who gets to play, and who need to come out, whatever it is,” said Quinn. “We might need to refine that, because here are a couple of young kids, who just on their skill level should probably be in the lineup.”
Having lost two straight and 15 of their last 17, the Oilers are already eyeing next season, yet they need to keep play some of their veterans in order to shop them around the league.
Even with them in the lineup, scoring has become a huge issue for the team, who’ve only managed to register more than two goals once in their last seven games.
Dustin Penner, who started off the year so well has cooled off and is looking very much like the same player who wallowed through the season last year and found himself in the coach’s doghouse. With a couple of extra forwards at his disposal now, it wouldn’t be surprising if Quinn decides to sit him out for a game or two.
“It seems like his confidence level is low,” Quinn said. “We talked to him two weeks ago and he felt his energy systems were off. We’re not sure what that means. When you’re not playing well, sometimes you start looking for some excuses as to why you don’t feel the same way. He doesn’t feel that pep that he had earlier on. We had him playing lots of minutes, but we thought we’d cut out the penalty kill and see if we could keep some gas in the tank, but that hasn’t seemed to solve the situation.”
Penner is looking sluggish, almost as if he’s in worst shape now than he was at he start of the season when he was dictating the play and driving hard to the net. It’s tough to remember the last time he cut to the net with a defender draped all over him. He has just four goals in his last 24 games.

Stars Director of European scouting (and former North Stars goalie) Kari Takko played for Assat, where Rynnas plays, and has a good relationship with the franchise, so the Stars are hoping that could help if they get to the point where they want to try to recruit Rynnas. But again, Stars scout Johan Garpenlov had a good relationship with Gustavsson, and Fabian Brunnstrom is a close friend, and the Stars still could not win that recruiting battle.

Anyway, it's a name to watch....and it shows just how wide the Stars are spreading their net in hopes of keeping options open in goal.
Is Tim Thomas on the market, as is being rumored? The Stars will probably have a talk about it. What does Vancouver need to let go of Cory Schneider? Do the Stars need to consider putting together a bid even though the price seems high right now? Should they consider Jaroslav Halak, even though he's 5-11 and not one of the big goaltenders everyone is seeking? Like Schneider, the price will be high in young players who have big upside.
(By the way, I am hearing that the organization's philosophy is that bigger is better when it comes to goalies).
If the price is too high on those players, should the Stars consider Kari Lehtonen? The Atlanta goalie was taken second overall in 2002 and obviously has talent. He's 94-83-17 with a 2.87 GAA and .912 save percentage. He's 26, he's 6-4 _ there's tons to like there.
But he has been injury prone, and that's why he has lost his No. 1 spot in Atlanta to Ondrej Pavelec. He makes million this season and will become a restricted free agent in the summer. At 26, he would probably sign a one-year deal and try to prove he deserves more.
He would be a cheaper option in that Atlanta probably doesn't need as much in players or draft picks to move him _ certainly a lot less than Vancouver or Montreal are asking for their goalies.
Lehtonen has missed all of this season at the NHL level after back surgery in September. He played four games for the Chicago Wolves on a recent rehab assignment and was recalled by Atlanta on Sunday. He went 1-1-2 with a 2.67 GAA and .899 save percentage in that stretch. So we'll see if he gets a start any time soon. One would think the team wants to see what he has, but they also want to win games and try to make a run at the playoffs, so this should be interesting.
And the other option _ and I think the one Joe Nieuwendyk would actually like to consider _ is that the team keeps the same goalies, and they get on a roll. If Marty Turco continues to play well in the next three games, Nieuwendyk can buy some time, reassess at the Olympic break and see if he even needs to make a change in goal before the March 3 trade deadline.

The Blackhawks are interested in bringing back an old friend.
According to a team source, the club has been talking to Anaheim about ex-Hawks defenseman James Wisniewski, perhaps willing to part with Cam Barker in return.
Wisniewski will be a restricted free agent after pulling in .75 million this year, and could jump into the million range next season, which means the Hawks probably wouldn't re-sign him.
At the same time, they could move Barker's .1 million salary for the next two years, something that seems inevitable between now and next fall as they try to solve a nasty cap dilemma.
A fan favorite during his four years here, Wisniewski is a solid fifth defenseman who would add an edge to the Hawks' blue line, along with a strong shot from the point.
Meanwhile, Barker fills more of a long-term need for the Ducks, and perhaps a change of scenery would do him some good.
The 23-year-old Barker is two years younger than Wisniewski, but so far hasn't lived up to his billing as "the next Denis Potvin," a label courtesy of former Hawks GM Dale Tallon after Barker was selected third overall in the 2004 draft.
Coach Joel Quenneville has obviously lost confidence in Barker this year, taking away playing time and power-play opportunities.

Slumping Panthers might re-think trade deadline plans

Panthers General Manager Randy Sexton said before Saturday's game in Atlanta he strongly felt the Panthers would be "buyers" at the trade deadline March 3, which comes a day after the Panthers start the post-Olympics sprint with a game in Atlanta again.
But even in the Eastern Conference, in which incredible parity exists, they're in danger of slipping to a point where they have to consider themselves sellers.
Saturday's 4-2 loss was their third straight and fourth in five games.
The Panthers, who took Sunday off here in Raleigh, have three games left before the break — Tuesday at the Hurricanes, then home Thursday against the Canucks and Saturday against the Bruins.
They were hoping to do more than just survive until the Olympic break, after which they'll get winger Nathan Horton back from a broken leg. They were hoping to improve their standing with the return of David Booth from a concussion.
"It's tough when I've been back for four games and we lose three," Booth said. "It's hurting the confidence a little bit. But you can't make excuses anymore. You have to be ready to play every night, especially against a (Thrashers) team that had travel problems."
While he's played with the same passion and effort, Booth right now clearly isn't close to the player he was before the concussion. And No. 1 center Stephen Weiss, who's shared the scoring burden with Horton all season, has been playing with a nagging lower-body injury that finally forced him to sit out Saturday. It's hoped he can return Tuesday.
Coach Peter DeBoer has grown increasingly frustrated with having to operate without his best forwards, and some of that frustration spilled out after Saturday's game.
Radek Dvorak ended his 15-game goal drought, but the streaks of Steven Reinprecht (16 games), Michael Frolik (12), Dominic Moore (12) and Rostislav Olesz (10) continue. Dvorak gave the Panthers a 2-0 lead after the first period, but the game was tied entering the third.

In just about every trade talk they’ve had, the Leafs have tried to move Jeff Finger. Apparently, it can’t be done. Odds are, Finger will get paid big league to play for the Marlies next season if the Leafs don’t buy out the remaining two years on the contract Cliff Fletcher signed him to ... Wouldn’t Alexei Ponikarovsky be a nice rental part for Washington, San Jose, Pittsburgh, Buffalo or one of about six other NHL teams looking to do some damage in the post-season? He has some skills, can skate, doesn’t have a lot of ego and would be an easy fit for most clubs.
